Articles (a, an, the) are the most frequently tested grammar topic in BCS. The rules seem simple but are full of exceptions. The key insight: "a" vs "an" depends on SOUND, not spelling, and "the" is used for specific/unique things.
"A" is used before consonant sounds. "An" is used before vowel sounds. It is the pronunciation that matters, NOT the first letter.

Q1. "He is _____ university student." (a) a (b) an (c) the (d) no article
Answer: (a) a Explanation: "University" starts with the sound /juː/, which is a consonant sound (like "you"). Consonant sound → "a". Many students wrongly choose "an" because "u" is a vowel letter, but articles depend on sound, not spelling.*
Q2. "She waited for _____ hour." (a) a (b) an (c) the (d) no article
Answer: (b) an Explanation: "Hour" has a silent "h" — it is pronounced /aʊər/, starting with a vowel sound. Vowel sound → "an". This is a classic BCS question.*
Q3. "_____ Padma is the longest river in Bangladesh." (a) A (b) An (c) The (d) No article
Answer: (c) The Explanation: Rivers always take "the" — the Padma, the Ganges, the Nile, the Amazon. This is a fixed rule with no exceptions.*
Q4. "He plays _____ cricket every evening." (a) a (b) an (c) the (d) no article
Answer: (d) no article Explanation: Sports and games do not take any article when mentioned in general. "He plays cricket" — no article needed. Compare: "He plays the piano" — musical instruments DO take "the".*
Q5. "She is _____ honest woman." (a) a (b) an (c) the (d) no article
Answer: (b) an Explanation: "Honest" has a silent "h" — it starts with the vowel sound /ɒ/. Silent h → vowel sound → "an". Same rule applies to: an hour, an heir, an honour.*
"A university" NOT "an university." The letter "u" is a vowel, but the sound /juː/ is a consonant sound. Same for: a uniform, a useful tool, a unique idea, a European country.
"An hour" NOT "a hour." The letter "h" is a consonant, but it is silent in "hour" — the actual sound starts with a vowel /aʊ/. Same for: an honest, an heir, an honour.
Forgetting "the" before rivers and oceans. "Padma is a big river" ❌ → "The Padma is a big river" ✅. Rivers/oceans/seas ALWAYS need "the".
Using "the" before languages. "He speaks the English" ❌ → "He speaks English" ✅. Languages do not take articles. BUT: "The English language is widely spoken" ✅ (here "English" is an adjective modifying "language").
Confusing single mountains vs mountain ranges. Mount Everest (no article) vs the Himalayas ("the" because it's a range/plural).
