Three Conditional Types — Quick Reference

Since the main clause uses could have + V3 (could have worked), the if-clause must use past perfect (had + V3) — so 'had been'.

Third Conditional examples (past regret/hypothesis)

Common mistake to avoid

• ✓ If I had known, I would have helped.

Never use 'would have' in the if-clause of third conditional. Only 'had + V3'.
