Core rule

Stative verbs (belong, contain, consist, possess, own, resemble, know, etc.) do NOT take passive voice or progressive tense.

Correct form

• ❌ The land is belonged to an old lady.
• ✅ The land belongs to an old lady.

• Stative verb = describes a STATE, not an action → can't be 'done to' something
• 'The land is owned by her' ✓ (own = active possession; some accept passive)
• 'The land is belonged to her' ❌ (belong = pure state; no passive)

Core rule

Fixed prepositional patterns:

• Result FROM = caused by (cause comes after FROM)
• Result IN = lead to (effect comes after IN)

Correct form

• ❌ His failure resulted for lack of attention.
• ✅ His failure resulted from lack of attention. (lack → cause)
• ✅ Lack of attention resulted in his failure. (failure → effect)

Memory trick

• 'Effect FROM cause' — effect first, then 'from', then cause
• 'Cause IN effect' — cause first, then 'in', then effect
